Peel, core and slice your tart apples. Leave all slices in a bowl of cold water with some lemon juice in it. This trick will prevent apple slices from getting brown.
Mix brown and white sugar with the ground cinnamon and nutmeg. set aside.
Grease a 9 x 13 baking dish and cover the bottom of it with one cup of breadcrumbs. Lay apple slices over.
Next Sprinkle the apple layer with the sugar mixture and dot with butter.
Repeat all the layers, and pour water over last layer of apples. Spread last cup of breadcrumbs on top.
Cover Brown Betty with foil to prevent the top from getting too brown and place dessert in pre-heated (350F) oven for 50 minutes. After half an hour Remove foil and continue cooking. Remove pan from oven and allow to cool down a little before eating.
Serve warm with a dollop of ice cream or whipped cream
